Is water damage covered by my insurance policy?
Water damage insurance claims depend on a few different criteria. Ultimately, that’s a question you’ll have to clarify with your insurance company. However, we can tell you that the viability of water damage insurance claims depends primarily on what caused the damage (storm, burst pipe, plumbing malfunction, localized flood, sump pump failure, etc.). Some insurance policies will outline scenarios that will NOT be covered without specific riders, like flood insurance or sump pump failure insurance.
Contacting a restoration contractor and your insurance adjuster at the same time is a good idea because the restoration contractor will help ensure that the water extraction and dry out and the rebuild process that should follow. If the full scope of the claim isn’t outlined and agreed upon from the start, there may be issues down the line, and property owners may have to pay out of pocket to get the property completely back to normal.
That depends on the types of materials that were affected by water. Drywall, carpet, and hardwood floors will take longer to dry than other materials in the space. We use moisture meters throughout the process and in many different locations to gauge the moisture levels and will continue to adjust our fans and dehumidifiers to achieve an efficient but effective dry time. The bare minimum of “three days to dry” may only produce a surface dry but can still leave behind moisture levels that create an ideal environment for mold to grow.
Most homeowners start trying to remove the water themselves before they realize they’ll need to contact their insurance company about a claim so they can call in a water damage restoration company. However, standing water around anything with a power cord or outlet or sagging ceilings makes the area unsafe. Also, many insurance claims require documentation of the loss BEFORE any work is done, including removing the water. Always take plenty of photos of the damage you see before taking any action to start cleaning up the mess. Your restoration contractor will also be able to back up your insurance claim scope with the necessary technical documentation.
If the water damage involves Category 1 water (clean and free of microbes and bacteria), many of your personal belongings can be salvaged. Category 2 water would include other water sources, including rainwater, that, while not containing biohazards or sewage, still pose health risks and the potential for destructive microbial growth and mold. A water damage restoration technician will help you sort through the property’s contents to determine what can be safely dried, what can be restored by a textile/contents technician, and what can’t be saved or salvaged. There are off-site facilities in the area that specialize in restoring water-damaged contents. Your restoration team will document all of the contents leaving the property for restoration or disposal for your records and also for reimbursement from your insurance company.
Identifying the source of the water damage is one of the first steps in both the insurance claim process and before beginning to dry out and repair the damaged areas. After all, if you replace a sagging, wet ceiling caused by a roof leak but doesn’t fix the roof, the next rainstorm will start the cycle all over again. The buckling to your hardwood floor could be caused by a leaking pipe. We will pinpoint your water damage’s exact cause and ensure the source is repaired. We had quite a bit of damage from a tornado/storm back in May 2024. So we needed a lot of work.
We had used Dwyer Restoration when we lived in Rockport Tx. Which was from Hurricane Harvey in 2017.
He was our Angel.
All the work then and now here in San Marcos TX. The staff and workers have done an outstanding job.
We have another project in the works now.

Dan and his entire crew were amazing. There were some hiccups along the way (had to change project managers part way through which was out of anyone’s hands). Our new project manager Edward was awesome. The one issue we had was with the subcontractor painting company. Dwyer built us beautiful new cabinets and to this day the paint job is what I would call “satisfactory.” In the end it was quite clear these painters were only going to do enough for a satisfactory job and that is where we left it because we didn’t want to have them come back for a 9th (literally) time. Dan Dwyer and Edward pushed hard to get them to fix things even going as far as to sit here and supervise while they worked. In the end the painters were just lazy and you can’t really fix that. The lesson here is absolutely use Dwyer Restoration. They are prompt, kind, fair, hardworking people and we would use them again in a heartbeat. Their internal survey got an 8/10 overall because of these painters but I do believe deserve a 5 star rating on here because they deserve your business and will not do you wrong. The second lesson is DO NOT use Carnival Painting if you actually want a quality paint job.

I recently had the pleasure of working with Dwyer Restoration to address significant water damage and mold issues in my home. From start to finish, the experience was exceptional, and I couldn't be more satisfied with their service.

From the moment I contacted them, the team at Dwyer Restoration was responsive and professional. They arrived promptly for the initial assessment, thoroughly inspected the damage, and provided a clear and detailed schedule to address the issues.

The remediation work was carried out efficiently and meticulously. Their team also took great care to protect the unaffected areas of my home. I was particularly impressed with their attention to detail and commitment to quality. My cabinets were needing to be rebuilt, all drywall at the kitchen peninsula was replaced, textured, painted and caulked better than it had been previously when the home was new.

I highly recommend their services. Their professionalism, expertise, and dedication to customer satisfaction make them the best choice for home remediation needs.

We hired Dwyer to do a full kitchen remodel after consulting with a number of local remodel and restoration companies. Their bid was comprehensive and detailed (almost a little overwhelming). They were quick to answer questions and turn the bid back around with adjustments.

The trade workers were competent and always polite. There were a few bumps as I would have expected with any major project. Dwyer responded to each concern in a timely and fair manner. In the end we were very happy with the result and would be willing to use them again.

Some details about the project:
* removed a load-bearing column and replaced with a LVL span. This required adjusting plumbing, electrical and HVAC around the area, as well as working with the city and a structural engineer for approval.
* replaced 4' fluorescent bulb lighting with recessed LEDs.
* custom cabinets (amazing work on this!) and new counters. This included converting the kitchen island into a peninsula.
* rebuild pantry with a slightly different footprint to better utilize space.

The majority of the work was done over about 60 days, with touch-ups and adjustments going on about a month longer.

My neighbor ran his car through my house in December 2019. The entire left side of my house was a huge hole and destroyed. Dwyer Restoration was recommended as the "disaster specialists". I am SO GLAD I hired them out of the 7 others I had come out to give me bids. They were the absolute BEST in the business to work with. I found them to be exceptional in 3 areas specifically:
1. Communication
2. Professionalism
3. Cleanliness
There will always be bumps along the way with ANY restoration/renovation. The key is, to work with people that DO THE RIGHT THING. Dwyer ALWAYS came through no matter what and did the right thing. They handled every detail of my renovation as if it was their house and what they would want done.
Dan Dwyer held my hand throughout the entire insurance process daily and we were able to get things agreed upon due to this.
Mark Brown was my project manager and did a phenomenal job with scheduling and being there every time I called. He was a pleasure to work with and made everything seem so seamless.
Guido Krumm was the German Carpenter that did most of the work on my house. He was also a pleasure to work with. I fell blessed to have had such a knowledgeable and trustworthy person doing the work on my house.
